Scholarship for Doctoral studies at Technical University of Denmark to investigate the optimized processing of multi-material architectures for functional ceramics.

Scholarship Description: The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU has been granted a four-year project, OPTIMAC, to investigate the optimized processing of multi-material architectures for functional ceramics. Functional ceramics are found in many environmentally friendly devices, including fuel cells, electrolyzers, gas separation membranes and magnetic refrigeration units. Their performance may be improved by grading the ceramic materials, i.e. making multi-material components. The processing of such components is challenging, and it is the objective of the project to increase our understanding of the processes involved, including shaping, sintering and mechanical behavior.

The project takes place in collaboration between Risø DTU and leading Danish and international research institutions and companies. Within this project, five positions for modeling the process have already started and there are now four new positions on experimental processing. One of them is this PhD scholarship within Modeling of Shape Instabilities occurring during Sintering.

Tape casting is a technique for forming thin plates of ceramic materials. You will work with experimental studies of tape casting to analyse and understand how interfaces are formed when two or more materials are co-casted adjacently to form a graded structure. This includes studying the influence of various processing parameters on the resulting tapes. The results of these investigations will be compared and verified against findings from numerical modeling obtained in the project. An understanding of how to process flat, dense and strong plates, i.e., with a negligible influence of the interface regions, is sought. Such plates are desired for magnetic refrigeration, an environmentally friendly novel cooling technology. Magnetic properties of the final plates will be measured and the plates will be tested in a prototype magnetic refrigeration device.

Qualifications

* Master’s degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science or similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering
* Knowledge in ceramic processing, preferably tape casting
* Preferably experience with experimental methods for materials characterization
* Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
* Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
